News: PM Urges States To Emulate Melaka’s Affordable Housing Programme

Jun 11, 2019

Impressed by the Melaka government’s efforts in providing affordable houses for the hardcore poor, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad called on other states to emulate Melaka’s housing programme.

The “Rumah Peduli” affordable housing programme sees the Melaka state government build affordable homes for the hardcore poor who own land but could not afford to construct their own houses, reported Bernama.

Dr Mahathir described the system used by the state in developing the affordable housing project as very good as the houses built were offered at a cheaper price at only RM40,000.

“I hope this system will be adopted by other states, for with houses that are so cheap the very poor can have their own houses to live more comfortably,” he said during the launch of “Rumah Peduli” at Lipat Kajang.

House recipient Hainizah Mohamed said this year’s Syawal month is more meaningful for her and her daughter as they get to celebrate Hari Raya in their own home, which was completed in May.

Hainizah, whose husband died in a road accident, revealed that she previously stayed with her mother in Taman Merlimau Utara.

“It’s like a dream come true; good fortune for my daughter because my late husband had wanted to have his own house but could not. But this Hari Raya we managed to celebrate in this house,” she said.

Melaka Chief Minister Adly Zahari reportedly said in February that the state government would be allocating an annual budget of RM3 million for the implementation of the Melaka “Rumah Peduli” programme in its bid to provide free homes to Melaka’s hardcore poor.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir noted that while the Pakatan Harapan government is just a year old, it already has many achievements – with over 60 percent of its pledges fulfilled by the Melaka state government.

However, he reminded the people not to be overly dependent on government assistance.

“What we are doing today is the result of the people who work and give returns to the government through taxes to enable various facilities to be built and implemented,” said Dr Mahathir.

“But if the people were too dependent on the government for aid and the like, not only would the people be poor but the government would eventually become poor too.”
