News: Penang Reclamation Project Finally Gets Green Light

Jul 8, 2019

The federal government has given the go-ahead signal for Penang’s three-islands reclamation project, albeit with 72 conditions. This comes after the Department of Environment (DOE) has faxed a letter of approval for the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.

“Of course we will like to have the official copy to be sent to us. At the moment we are still studying the content; it is quite a big document,” said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The mega project will see the development of three man-made islands with a total land area of 1,800 hectares. Some parts of the islands will be put up for sale, with the proceeds used to finance projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), reported Bernama.

Chow noted that the state government of Penang needs time to study all 72 conditions – which were more than those stated in the previous EIA approval.

“Our team will be working hard. When we implement the project we will comply with all these conditions and regulations imposed by the approving authority,” he said.

“All these conditions, I believe, are not new because in the process of application we had a session with the various technical agencies which imposed the conditions on the State Government.”

He revealed that Penang is committed to complying with all the conditions regardless of the expenditure needed.
