News: Road Expansion Project: Developer To Plant Twice As Many Trees

Feb 3, 2020

The developer of the road expansion project at Jalan Bukit Anak Tukun in Rawang will replant twice as many trees it felled as per the agreement it entered with Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).

The road widening project led to the felling of 193 trees, out of the 262 raintrees within three zones. Only 69 trees remained.

The replanting exercise was part of the developer’s requirements for the project, revealed MPS Landscape Department Director Mokhtar Affandi Abd Ghani, reported The Star.

MPS made the statement in response to the outcry made by the affected residents as well as environmental non-governmental organisations (NGOs) concerning the tree-felling exercise for the project along the 1.5km stretch.

It was previously reported that Templer Park Resort Coalition of Residents Associations chairman Datuk Mukhtar Ismail said around 50 trees were cut down in December last year.

They later discovered that the road expansion project would include a bicycle lane, hence more trees were felled.

This is contrary to the 2018 announcement of MPS that only 40 trees would be cut down to make way for the project.
